Steep Rock Autumn, 2017

In the fall of 2017 I decided to revisit a subject I worked with extensively twenty years ago. Steep Rock Preserve, in Washington, CT, is a beautiful river and forest park covering several thousand acres in three distinct sections. Previously I had photographed there with large format cameras and made contact prints in platinum/palladium. This time I wanted to work in a much looser, freer manner with small digital cameras, and then produce modest sized (7.3x11 inches) Pt/Pd prints from digital negatives. It's impossible to make web presentations that are faithful to the look and feel of a platinum print. For these I used the same digital cameras to make copy photographs of the finished prints (better results than scanning, which picks up too much paper texture, distorting the look of the pictures) and then adjusted the files in Photoshop to get as close as possible to the sense of the original prints.
